GEPPS CROSS V WALKERVILLE WHITES
Walky Whites came up against a tough opposition this week playing a tight, in-form Gepps Cross team.
Both teams showed a high level of skills and played some tough tacking fast footy.
Walky won the toss and opted to go with the breeze in what turned out to be the scoring end for the match. Only 1 goal 2 points were scored at the other end during the entire game.
The Cats started off well leaving the Rams scoreless at quarter time – but then Gepps Cross had the wind the next quarter and used it to their advantage.
Fortunately the Cats were able to keep the Rams in check with good teamwork and a strong defence.
This is the first time our defence has been really called into action – so it was pleasing to see how well it worked under pressure.
We saw great passages of play under pressure using 1,2 handball out of defence and a fabulous first mark in a game for Luke Vidovic in the oppositions goal square near the final siren.
While we are good at team footy and the short passes we could perhaps learn something from Gepps Cross who very successfully used long kicks to find a loose man. Too often we kicked to a pack rather than a loose player and too often we allowed them to have a loose player to kick too.
One other element of the game worth a mention this week was the tough fearless tackling by both teams – well done boys – you stood your ground and gave as good as you got.
In all it was a good game, and I’m sure everyone appreciated having some serious competition this week - and when the final siren sounded it was a win for Walkerville.
Goal Kickers: Charlie Kirchner 2, Xavier Preece 2 and Harry Steele 2.
